He first stepped behind the microphone as a mobile DJ, swapping early ambitions of acting for a life in radio. His talent quickly took him to London’s famous Radio TopShop training ground, before landing roles at major stations including Radio Luxembourg. In 1989, Gary made history as the very first voice heard on the newly launched Atlantic 252, opening the station with a memorable line that radio fans still talk about today. Less than a year later, he was snapped up by BBC Radio 1.
Over the years, Gary has worked across the UK radio industry, earning awards and building a reputation for engaging, personality-driven broadcasting. Beyond radio, his voice has become familiar to millions - from classic children’s TV to prime-time entertainment, including his role as the announcer on the iconic show Funhouse and as the in-store voice on Supermarket Sweep. He has even appeared on screen in television drama, adding another dimension to his versatile career.
Now, Gary brings his passion for the decade that defined a generation to Hereward Gold. Hosting Totally 80s every Saturday morning from 10am to 12pm, he delivers two hours packed with the biggest hits, forgotten favourites, and the stories behind the music.
A lifelong fan of 80s music, Gary’s collection includes every Top 40 hit from the decade - a claim he admits might sound slightly obsessive. Still, he insists it’s far better than confessing to a love of 80s fashion!
